"Trumperie" is a self-portrait series born from my personal experience as an immigrant, particularly following the denial I faced when attempting to enter Canada in 2017. This series delves into the emotional and socio-political struggles of displacement, rejection, and migration. Printed on delicate rice paper, the photographs are hand-stamped with custom-designed stamps reading “Denied,” “Deported,” and “Rejected.”
These stamps symbolize the societal and political barriers that immigrants face, while also reflecting the tension between personal identity and external forces. The scarves I wear represent my Yemeni heritage, contrasting with the stark reality of rejection and alienation that migrants endure.
"Trumperie" highlights the emotional toll of migration, questioning the notion of belonging and inviting viewers to reflect on the dehumanizing effects of border control.
