The concept of identity first arose during my adolescence when I was forced to accept that the freedom of my innocence must be traded for a life behind the veil, which sparked my desire for creative exploration into the profound impact of identity. Through these images, I aim to depict the journey we navigate through time, culture, and art as we grapple with the instability of identity. The COVID-19 pandemic further amplified these struggles, challenging us to question who we are when we adapt to socio-political currents or when we resist them.

In this series, I use masks printed with vintage IDs as a symbol of how we are shaped by social constructs and historical identity markers. By incorporating archival passport photos, I create a dialogue between the past, present, and future. These masks blend past and present identities, reflecting the profound shifts in how we understand ourselves in times of crisis.

The project also draws from my experiences as an artist living between the United States and Yemen, where photography was historically restricted, and considers the role of women in my homeland. The pandemic further complicates this exploration, as public health measures like masking have reshaped our sense of self and connection. In this series, I invite viewers to reflect on how our identitiesāboth public and privateāare negotiated across time, culture, and crisis, and to consider the complex relationships between the past, the present, and our future.
